Terms of Service

Agreement

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the WhoOwes mobile application and this website (together, the "Service"), provided by the WhoOwes Team — an independent developer who builds the app as a personal project ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy.

If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old (16 in the EU/UK) to use WhoOwes. By using the Service, you represent that you meet this age requirement and that you have the legal capacity to enter into this agreement in your jurisdiction.

Your account

• You are responsible for keeping your account credentials safe and for all activity on your account.
• You agree to provide accurate information and to keep it current.
• If you suspect unauthorized access, notify us at support@whoowes.app right away.
• One person, one account. Do not impersonate someone else or share an account with another person.

Acceptable use

When using WhoOwes, you agree not to:

• Use the Service to harass, defraud, or harm other users.
• Upload content that is illegal, abusive, hateful, infringing, or invasive of privacy.
• Scrape, reverse-engineer, or otherwise misuse the Service or our backend.
• Attempt to access another user's account or data without permission.
• Use the Service to send spam or unsolicited messages.
• Interfere with the Service's security, performance, or availability.
• Use the Service in violation of any applicable law.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules.

Your content

You retain ownership of the expense descriptions, notes, receipt photos, and other content you create in WhoOwes ("Your Content").

You grant us a limited, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, transmit, and display Your Content solely to operate the Service for you and the friends and groups you have shared it with. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except where retention is necessary for other users who relied on the same record (see our Privacy Policy) or required by law.

You are responsible for Your Content. You represent that you have the right to upload it and that it does not violate anyone else's rights.

Payments & settlements

WhoOwes itself is free to use. There are no subscriptions, premium tiers, or fees.

WhoOwes is a tracking and calculation tool. We do not process, hold, or transfer money. When you mark an expense as settled, we record the settlement in your account — we do not move funds. Actual payments happen in third-party apps (such as UPI apps on Android or iOS), and those transactions are governed by the terms of those apps and your bank, not by us.

You are responsible for confirming with the other party that any settlement actually occurred outside the app. We make no guarantee about the accuracy, completion, or success of any third-party payment.

Availability

We work to keep the Service running, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted availability. The Service may be unavailable from time to time for maintenance, technical issues, or reasons outside our control. We may also add, change, or remove features.

Third-party services

The Service relies on third-party providers including (without limitation) Convex, Firebase, Google, Apple, Meta (WhatsApp), Expo, and Cloudflare. Your use of features powered by these providers is also subject to their respective terms. We are not responsible for third-party services we do not control.

Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

We make no warranty that the Service will be error-free, uninterrupted, or free of harmful components, nor that any data you store will be preserved indefinitely. You are encouraged to keep your own records of important financial information.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, in no event shall the WhoOwes Team be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from or relating to your use of the Service.

Our total cumulative liability for any claim relating to the Service shall not exceed one hundred US dollars (US $100), reflecting that the Service is provided free of charge and as a personal project, not a commercial offering.

Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitations; in those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.

Termination

You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time by emailing support@whoowes.app.

We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms or if continued use creates a legal or safety risk. We will notify you when possible.

On termination, your access ends. Sections that by their nature should survive — including ownership, disclaimers, liability limits, and governing law — survive termination.

Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent change. If we make a material change, we will notify you in-app or by email before it takes effect. Continued use of the Service after the change becomes effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

Governing law

To the extent enforceable, these Terms are governed by the laws of India, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, with venue in the competent courts of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This does not override mandatory consumer-protection rights you may have in your country of residence.
